Girls with a Mission

Hello Deb,
My name is Denikka Miller and I am a jh/hs teacher in Troy, MT. A colleague and I run a group titled Girls with a Mission. The goal of our group is to help others locally as well as nationally. We read your article in the newsletter and our group would like to help. The group itself wants to make a cash donation. We also have set up a box in our school asking students as well as staff members to help with items such as crayons, scissors, etc. Please email me back with a mailing address that we can send a check to. Thank you so much for the wonderful cause that you are contributing to.

Sincerely,
~ Denikka Miller

Sometimes you need to step outside, clear your head and remind yourself of who you are, and where you wanna be . And sometimes you have to venture outside your world in order to find yourself. ~Anonymous

  1. Girls with a Mission is a group that was developed 3 years ago because we had some young girls who needed a safe place to talk about issues that came up in their lives. Over time though this club has morphed into helping those in our community as well as those around the world. Our first project was to raise money for children with cleft palates in other countries through the Smile Train Organization. We do fundraising to be able to accomplish our goals of helping others. The main focus of our group is:
to recognize what social change is.
to come up with a way to make social change happen within our community as well as within the world.
to provide girls with professional female role models.
to provide girls with leadership training.
to provide inspiration to work together in teams to solve problems.
to provide girls with a safe environment to discuss topics that of are of concern to them within their own world as well as with their body.

We learned about Vacation Backpacks for Tornado Victims through an NCTE article. The article was discovered, showed to our group members and away things got started. Our group is currently made up of 5 young ladies that will be Sophomores next year. We are hoping to expand our group this coming school year.
